It is my pleasure to join you today to celebrate the achievement of women in trucking and the high safety standards everyone here brings to the road.

First, I want to thank Ellen Voie for her visionary leadership and for her hard work in making this occasion so successful.

We didn't quite reach the international record of women truck drivers gathering at the same time, I am absolutely confident you'll get 'em next year!

How often have you heard someone say that trucking is a man's world? Have you had someone say that the job is too rough, too stressful or too dangerous?  By being here you have proven the naysayers wrong.

I’m Not Going To Take it Anymore, Are You?

By Sandy Long

We drivers have seen many changes over the last few years that have adversely affected us and could endanger not only our lives, but also our livelihoods.

The new HOS, now under re-review, took away our flexibility to run our trucks in the safest manner for our own health and safety. They did that by taking away the ability for us to nap when we are tired, wait out sunrise/sunset and rush hour traffic.

The anti-idling laws did not take into account that we have to take 10 hours off a day 8 of which is taken as a sleep period mandated by federal regulations and that we would have to do so in a non-heated or cooled truck oftentimes sitting in hot sun or frigid temperatures.

Now, based on faulty science and backed by special interest groups who will make millions off of them, the Medical Review Board has recommended to the FMCSA that they make sleep apnea testing mandatory based on BMI and that medical conditions a driver might have, even if treated, may actually take away the driver’s job.

The Possible End of Your Career

By Sandy Long

The FMCSA Medical Review Board (MRB) has made recommendations that if adopted by the FMCSA will put thousands of truckers out of work. This will affect ALL commercial drivers that require DOT physicals, union, non-union, student, local, regional, otr, if not immediately, then as the driver gets older.

Good Samaritan not put off by a ‘cockroach in the soup’

One of the most popular people stories to come out of the collapse of Arrow Trucking was a Good Samaritan story aired by Amarillo’s NewsChannel 10, KFDA. The Tulsa-based carrier ceased operations suddenly, leaving 1,400 employees and drivers unemployed two days before Christmas. NewsChannel 10’s Dec. 27 newscast told how a trucker unselfishly volunteered to put 200 gallons of fuel in the tank of a truck driven by a former Arrow driver trying to get home.

Such a tale is heartwarming, especially on Christmas Eve. However, it didn’t end there and as facts surrounding the good deed unraveled, it demands that a serious warning message be shared with others.

Let’s back up a bit. OOIDA Life Member Rusty Wade is an owner-operator from Alabama who has been trucking since 1973. Wade, also known as “Yoda,” was following OOIDA’s Facebook initiative to support stranded Arrow drivers when he read about a couple stuck at a truck stop in Stafford, MO. Wade was trucking through Missouri and decided to see if he could help.

Debating the Issues

By Sandy Long

Debating various issues with people who have a differing opinion has always been a favorite hobby of mine; it is how I learn and grow as a person. While some might say that I am very opinionated and set in my ways, I always at some point consider the other person’s perspective and at times adjust my thinking on a subject. To say that I have learned many things from these types of debates is an understatement.
