Maintaining a Relationship Copyright Sandy Long A driver friend died in May. I only mention it because he and his wife taught me how to maintain a relationship. “Bill” and “Fran” were married for forty years, most of those years Bill was a trucker, the last few years driving for the same company as I do. Fran would come out on the truck with him once in awhile and that is where I met her. When Bill had to leave the company a couple of years ago for health reasons, I gave him a ride to his home in WV. The trip provided lots of time to talk. When I asked him how he and Fran had made it for forty years, this is what he told me. |

Sexual Harassment Copyright Sandy Long At a truckstop recently, I heard a thought provoking exchange on the cb. A lady driver asked a question, a guy made a suggestive comment to her and when she didn’t respond, he repeated himself. I assume she could see who was saying these things because she threatened to call his company and file a sexual harassment complaint on him. What the guy said was rude, crude and socially unacceptable, but was it sexual harassment or was he just a jerk? |

Dealing with Workman’s Compensation Copyright Sandy Long When I was injured in a truck wreck, I thought workman’s compensation (WC) was there to protect me. I quickly found out that WC was there to protect the employer first. WC is an insurance that employers carry to protect them from being sued by and/or to provide medical treatment for employees if they are injured on the job. The WC insurance company is in business to make money so will do all it can to mitigate what it pays out and can be tough to deal with, they have reason to be. |

Big Girls Don’t Cry, Or Do They? Copyright Sandy Long Trucking is a stressful job. Reefers go out under a produce load, tires blow out, trucks break down, ac units quit on the hottest days, heavy traffic and bad directions all contribute to the stress we all suffer on the road, add to that home/family stress and you have a volatile situation. Men often deal with stress by yelling, cussing and throwing things; some even pick fights on the radio or worse yet, face to face. Some women do those things also, but mostly we either go quiet or get emotional…we sometimes cry. |

Estimating the Costs of Unintentional Injuries, 2007 The National Safety Council makes estimates of the average costs of fatal and nonfatal unintentional injuries to illustrate their impact on the nation's economy. The costs are a measure of the dollars spent and income not received due to accidents, injuries, and fatalities. It is another way to measure the importance of prevention work.
