A Look at Sexual Harassment: Part 1

We have been hearing a lot on the net lately from some who are focusing on sexual harassment, attacks on women and other more deviant behaviors and actions. We have heard everyone blamed from the companies to the trainers to all male drivers. We are led to believe that this problem is so rampant that it is almost epidemic. We have not heard of any solutions to the problem for these types of actions. To find solutions, one has to understand the problem.

I came to my conclusions by posing the question: Why are/were women subjugated and had their rights and power taken away from them and why this does still hold true today. I came up with four possible answers.

In this series, we have seen where perhaps the problems come from, but what are the problems? A little more history…Back in the day, there was some very real violence against women drivers, not violence because they were women, but because they were women truck drivers. Usually nice men were so incensed that women had the audacity to take a man’s job from him that these men sometimes snapped and would try to force a woman off the road, would actually slam into them bodily when passing thru a hallway or would sabotage the woman’s equipment. Thankfully, these types then as now were a very small few in number, but it was scary when one would run across one of these types because there was no guarding one’s self against them.

The one exception to women working with their spouses was during WWII when women came into all industries to fill positions left empty by the men who were called to serve in the military...then women drove trucks alone all over the country.

A Look at Sexual Harassment: Final Part

As women who work outside of the home and work in mixed gender workplaces, we cannot act as if we are at a high tea with the Queen or go around as if we are better than anyone else is. Likewise, we cannot try to act like the males either. Therefore, it is a conundrum in how we should act and expect to be treated. Through the years, what has worked best for me is to just do my job, be pleasant and if someone gives me crap dish it right back at them…but I never yell sexual harassment. It works for me, but it might not work for you.
