Being here is not where I thought I would be just a few months ago. I never dreamed I would lose a beloved brother as I have done. That being said, it is as it is and I am standing here not to bury my brother Tom, but to celebrate his life and honor him for what he was to me. For the first years of my life, Tom and I shared the usual sibling love-hate bond. Then we decided to just love each other when he went into the service. He taught me what it was to love one’s country and to do what one could to serve it as he did honorably through being in the Navy Seabees and then as we both chose to do as truckers. |

The Heart of the Matter Copyright Sandy Long We hear and read many stories about men who have heart attacks and problems, the ex-vice president even made headline news when his heart acts up. Little is said about women having heart attacks even though the Women’s Heart Foundation reports that: 8 million women in the US are currently living with heart disease; 35,000 are under age of 65. Four million suffer from angina. 435,000 American women have heart attacks annually; 83,000 are under age 65; 35,000 are under 55. 42% of women who have heart attacks die within 1 year, compared to 24% of men. Under age 50, women’s heart attacks are twice as likely as men’s to be fatal. |

Here’s to Your Health Ladies Copyright Sandy Long There are many things that affect a trucker’s body whether male or female. There are some things that affect lady drivers alone though and these issues are rarely discussed anywhere. Most of the problems come from the vibration of the truck, some from the constant upper body work we do, a few from the seats we sit on, and others from the jostling we take from rough roads. We will start from the top to the bottom. |

Caution Men Working Copyright Sandy Long The trucking industry ought to be littered with signs saying ‘caution men working’. At approximately 7% of the drivers on the road, we women in the trucking industry are sure to have to work and interact with males both drivers and non drivers every day. Some women work in shops and have to supervise male mechanics, there are the hundreds of women brokers and dispatchers that have to dispatch more males than females and some women own their own small fleets and have to hire male drivers. |
