Hostile Workplace? By Sandy Long There is some talk going around that trucking has a hostile workplace, and no, they are not talking about dealing with four wheelers! It appears that some think that trucking companies do not treat their drivers well at all, especially trainees. Could this be true or is something else going on? |

My ol’ granny used to say that anything did not affect you directly was not your business. Sound advice on the surface, but identifying what affects a person directly or does not can be a hard thing to do. One’s neighbor beats his wife and children. While that does not affect one directly, would not a caring person try to help, making it their business? A person sees someone commit a crime…say vandalism. That does not affect the person directly, but shouldn’t that person make it their business and report it? |

Satin and Steel Sisterhood: Changing its focus Satin and Steel Sisterhood was born this last summer just when some family tragedies started in my family and I did not have the time to devote to its start up that I should have. While I still think that there is a need for a website dedicated to women who work in all of the non traditional jobs out there, I have decided to slightly change the site’s focus more towards women truck drivers. |

Perpetual Victims Copyright Sandy Long Perhaps one of the greatest lessons I had to learn was how to not be a victim or remain a victim after my bad childhood and the things that have happened to me since childhood. It was actually a very freeing thing to learn as I learned to accept responsibility for just what was my mistakes or errors in judgment and let others take their share. When one is a child, one has no power over what happens to them. Abuse of all types, illness, the divorce of one’s parents, bad role models and dysfunctional families are all things that a child has no control over. It is totally the responsibility of the adults in a child’s life that controls everything. Once a child reaches adulthood though, the power over their lives comes to them fully. |

First Licensed Woman Trucker/Woman in Trucking by Paul M Lucko DRENNAN, LILLIE ELIZABETH MCGEE (1897-1974). Lillie Elizabeth Drennan, the first licensed female truck driver and trucking firm owner in Texas (and the United States), was born at John Sealy Hospital in Galveston, Texas, probably in early January of 1897. Her mother, about whom little is known, gave her up for adoption; at three weeks of age Lillie became the foster daughter of Francis Carolyn (Fannie, Grannie) Nichols McGee of Hempstead. |
