We will most likely never know why that man in Arizona decided to kill people; perhaps he wanted to commit suicide by cop, who knows. For some reason though, he went ‘postal’ and followed a long line of others who ‘lost it’ and took innocent person’s lives in the process. Prayers flow to the victims and survivors; and to all Americans, because his actions highlight what can happen when government fails and people stand up. Rhetoric has flown in the days following this sad event with fingers pointing and blame being assigned. Some superficial actions have been suggested such as congress sitting together during president Obama’s state of the union address instead of sitting divided by party. While I have to agree that is a good thing to do, it falls short of the bipartisan concentration needed to bring our country and people together. |

Street Smarts
Being street smart is one of the most important things you can learn as a woman in trucking. Knowing how to conduct yourself can protect you from not only making terrible mistakes in judgment but also protect you from others who may view you as prey. Street smarts cannot really be taught unless one has good common sense, they go hand in hand. This spring, the FBI released notification of the making of a new division to search for serial killers who may be truckers. According to the media reports, 500 women’s bodies have been found along highways, in truck stops, motels and other places that truckers conduct business. The FBI estimates, according to media reports, that there may be as many as 200 truckers acting as serial killers. |

Why Did You Do It?
Do you ever see another woman driver going by and wonder why she chose to become a trucker? I do, especially if it is someone young. With their whole world ahead of them, why would a young woman become a trucker instead of going to college and getting a big salaried job in an office somewhere or getting married and having a family while she can? I started driving over the road at a fairly young age; I was 29 when I started my common carrier otr career. For me it was a natural progression from my years on carnivals where I moved rides and equipment from spot to spot and by choice, I didn’t want to have kids. For me it was a simple choice, I could make more money driving truck than any other job I was qualified to do at the time. If the circumstances were the same, I would probably make the same choice. |

Not My Business?
My ol’ granny used to say that anything that did not affect you directly was not your business. Sound advice on the surface, but identifying what affects a person directly or does not can be a hard thing to do. One’s neighbor beats his wife and children. While that does not affect one directly, would not a caring person try to help, making it their business? A person sees someone commit a crime…say vandalism. That does not affect the person directly, but shouldn’t that person make it their business and report it? A car flips over on the interstate ahead of you not coming anywhere near you; the road is clear. Do you continue to drive on by or do you make it your business and stop to see if you can help? You do not drink alcohol. The state you live in wants to prohibit anyone from drinking alcohol which does not affect you directly, but you think it ok for others to choose to have a drink. Do you support the bill or not support it making it your business or do you just ignore it? |
